GST; What Changes would make it work

After several red flags in the way the GSTN functions, finally the Officials from the finance ministry have indicated that indeed these issues are being reviewed at the highest level. As a Chartered Accountant with my experience from Fortune 500 company wherein the end users were all highly qualified people, the systems need to be simple. In case of GSTN, the system was pretty simple in paper. However when we got to use it, the complications came out. The system is highly illogical or rather not tweaked to match the practical requirements of the stakeholders. Be it the registration or the backend access to the tax department officials. Changes that would make the system workable. 1. No Matching of Invoices. Currently the buyer and the seller has to match the sales and purchases. Though a very simple process it is highly resource consuming. Just imagine a single paise difference in invoice will lead to manually matching the invoice with at least 2-3 minutes of time being sp...

GST Challenges and My views

I felt there is need to review the GST process in the GST website due to various issues cropping up. The issues can be segregated into Legal and Technical. Legal being the issues which require the GST Council to recommend and the Govt to act. The Technical issues being the ones which needs the change to be approved by the respective process owners. Though this looks very simple, the issue is that most of the issues we face today are both Legal as well as Technical. I will be updating my blogs by taking up 1 issue at a time along with my views and workarounds. Lets discuss the issues one by one. 1. The Site : gst.gov.in Lots and lots of efforts have gone in creating this application. (The front end what we get to see is the webpage). However due to high traffic the site is slow at times. We, the taxpayers & Professionals use the site for variety of reasons viz a. New Registrations b. Checking the Status of the Application c. Filing of returns d. Check...

History of Income Tax in India

When we look at the Income tax history in India, we realise how progressive we were long back even before the british. There are references found in the works of Manu Smirthi and Arthasastra apart from our own Thirukural. As we stand today we have an Act of 1961 which has in origins from 1860. To have a better perspective we need to know about a British Statesman by name, Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth who was the Prime Minister from 1801 to 1804. The tax was initially levied on Land which was used for agriculture and the collection was in kind. Income tax was thought to be a government instruction into the private matters. To overcome this in 1707, when the Kingdom of Great Britain came into being, a Window tax, wherein the tax was collected basis the number of Windows a property had was introduced.                             ...

Mangalore Bus Drivers and their cold blooded murders

I have been living this beautiful city called Mangalore for past about 5 years.... In the past five years so many things have changed in Mangalore.... In 2008 literally I will not get anything to eat after 9... rather they were  no budget food joints where i can have my dinner... but now i find a lot of places which i might have missed those days..... Shops used to close by 8:00/8:30 & the Bharat mall had changed it i think. Big Bazaar used to be open till 9. Then slowly things started changing. I had got my bike by those days and i used to enjoy the company of my colleagues by checking out all food joints. Though there are so many changes, one thing I haven't found any change is the Buses.  Board a local bus and never expect a ticket to be issued, but keep the change for the conductor. One tip i got for traveling in the bus was never to keep your hands full. Always you have to hold on to some thing else expect yourselves to be thrown to the floor when th...

A Comment on Airline Business in India

1.Any airline is coming into picture after a large land area which might have been used for agriculture is taken away from farmers and given to Airport Authority. Thus high taxes are required to off set the social security of the people who lost the land. People would love to argue that the compensation is paid. But i would love to bring it to their attention that the amount is paltry and if you can't accept it think about this.Goverment will take away the house owned by you and giving you Government rates. 2. If AI needs bail out its because of private airlines only. No one knows why AI cancelled some of the most profitable routes wherein the load factor was always 100% (Kochi to middle east, Bangalore to some european nations etc). All these slots were given to private players. 3. The basic argument of economists for private sector is efficiency  and if private sector is not able to deliver it why not government take over it rather than bailing it out? And if Air India ca...

Google + invitation received....

Finally today i had received an invitation from my friend for google plus. All i did was signed out of my google account and logged in again. After this i just went to plus.google.com. phew already my photo and friends were waiting for me.... all i had to do was to jus check things and add people to my circle.... nice work google.... Still a lot more things to come.... like games for which kids have n of logins in Facebook... Google + Invite.....

Since Google announced the Google +,  I am thirlled with it. But the problem is that i don't have a invite for joining Google +. I was trying various ways to get it to Google plus. I found none of the methods work. First i tried using my iPod touch to access the login page..... Failure. Lots of search in google for google + invite, then came the idea for linking the profile for google +. This was also detected by google and blocked. Next idea was asking all friends whether they are using google +... at last i found a friends friend using google +.  He also sent a invite for the friend. Then came the googly.... Google stopped accepting invitations. In between i had tried using google + application in chrome. Finally nothing has worked. In the mean while i have found something interesting. Facebook has got a lot of ways to keep the users with themselves. Facebook behaves like the Sun Tv in cable industry. Not good. Thangavel.

How to buy books online

I have been buying books online from Flipkart.com for a while now. I remember calling the customer care for the first time and asking whether they sell original copyrighted books or those are illegal prints. Laughed the executive and explained me that they have agreements with the publishers to sell books online. I found the books which i could't find anywhere (even in Landmark, Cross etc)... Esp the books for CIMA, CISA etc.... Now they have also started selling Music, Movies, Games, Mobiles, Cameras, Computers and Mp3 Players/iPods. Just try searching and buying from Flipkart.com.....

Pranab Mukherjee

Hi , This is urgent! I have just shown my support for India's forests. I have asked Pranab Mukherjee to hold a public consultation before deciding on the fate of our forests. Please read the mail below and take action. http://www.greenpeace.org/india/en/What-We-Do/Stop-Climate-Change/Quit-Coal/public-consultation-on-forests/ Regards, Dear , The coal versus forest tussle has intensified. A decision will be taken soon by the Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Pranab Mukherjee. Their first meeting is on Thursday , the 17th. [1] Last year environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh marked certain dense forests as No Go zones for coal mining. [2] The coal ministry however wants access to all these areas. [3] The GoM is now going to decide if we should destroy these forests and the biodiversity they hold to mine more polluting coal. [4] These forests are crucial to the livelihood of millions and home to wildlife like tigers and elephants.[5] Forests are a nationa...

XBRL the impact on your finance function

It's time for larger and smaller businesses to consider the short term challenges and longer term benefits that extensible business reporting language could bring. By Audrey Besson Levine. The UK is following the US lead in planning to make coding language XBRL obligatory for corporate filings by 2011. Many still question and debate the usefulness of the tool and the required learning curve might scare some. But finance functions in both larger and smaller companies should now be investigating the long term benefits of the tool for them. Conceived in April 1998 by Charles Hoffman, XBRL, the Extensible Business Reporting Language, has been subsequently launched in several parts of the world and has even become mandatory for public company statutory fillings in countries such as the US and Japan. From bookkeeper to business partner Beyond regulatory compliance, the use of XBRL could prove to have a significant impact on the future of the finance function. It can enhanc...

John Grisham

John Grisham is been among my favorite authors for quite some time now. I have read all his published works but for the collection of short stories. (including Theodore Boone). If you have interest in the legal world and esp if you want to know more how the american system works you have to read couple of JG's books. Happy reading... Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer

Private oil companies may get govt subsidy

This was among the top stories which got my attention….. and i had a thought what will happen if it is gonna happen…. I may be right or wrong… if i am wrong pls correct me….   Pros for them (in numbers) and Opportunities for us in(alphabets) the disguise of cons…. 1. Private Oil Companies though will be compensated for the sales, might prefer to operate the pumps which are logistically profitable in the short run as well as in the long run. ( Obviously all the current ones are already planned for that…so may be no new pumps in rural areas) a. In the current budget the Govt has allocated a lot of funds to rural areas. This might increase our sales in rural areas due to improvement in road transport, where we will be having  a small outlet. If sales increases we will be in a position to capture it rather than a private player tapping it.   2.They will have a marketing plan for each and every market. Say for example Car Owners in a particular area, College Students in ...

How to make effective decisions

How to make effective decisions As an accountant and business partner, making decisions is an important part of your job. But good decision making needs practice. By Duncan Brodie FCMA, director of Goals and Achievements. Delaying decisions can have many negative consequences. For example, imagine that you failed to take a decision about a projected cash shortfall. You would not be taking any action such as arranging an overdraft, extending supplier payment terms or focusing on collecting monies owed to your organisation. You would get an unwelcome outcome - running out of cash is not likely to build your reputation. Barriers to effective decision making There are many reasons why people resist taking decisions. These include: 1. Procrastination - delaying or putting off something so that a small decision ends up becoming a major one. 2. Information overload - you have so much information that you don't know where to begin. 3. Waiting for perfect information - accounta...

CAT eaten by Virus?
